F.P. Birnies was Established in 1950, when it was bought by the present owner's Father. It started life as a bicycle and toy shop, the toys were soon replaced by budgies, as the late Ferguson Birnie Snr was a champion budgerigar breeder and exhibitor. Over the years, things grew from there, and eventually his son, Ferguson Birnie, the present owner came to work in the family business, bringing with him his knowledge of tropical and marine fish keeping. One of his most remembered achievments was successfully breeding Seahorses, in a time when very little was known about them.
The shop still continued to grow and history repeated itself with the 3rd generation son, Andrew, joining the family business. His interest in reptiles and other creatures began when he became the proud owner of a Chile Rose Tarantula, which was handed to him by Grampian Police after being confiscated in a case they were working on. This incident encouraged him to find out more about exotic species of insects and reptiles fast becoming available to the pet market. Soon after that he started to rescue unwanted Iguanas and Terrapins and it evolved from there. His Father allowed him a small section in the shop to try out his new interest and 18 years on, Birnie's Pet Shop has become a well respected Reptile Base for the North East of Scotland.
In 2007 the shop was expanded, doubling the amount of vivariums we have and making way for a new animal room. This in turn has created more shelf space, so we can now carry a wider range of products.
